Our Bollywood stories, and literally almost all forms of media, have trained us into believing that romantic love is the only way to live heaven. And, while this may be true to a certain extent, it must be kept in mind that we must not undervalue the power of friendship.
“I woke up pissed off today
And lately, everyone feels fake
Somewhere I lost a piece of me
Smoking cigarettes on balconies”
Or love for our friends may not be equally evident, but we all know that it is equally vital, if not more. Friendship is what keeps us stable and grounded. The worst of storms can be sailed through if we have our friends by our side. Friends provide the required tranquillity to life.
Our school days are cherished so much only because we had so much fun with our friends. Romantic relationships give us an experience of extreme emotions, while friendship helps us maintain sanity through all that.
“But I can’t do this alone
Sometimes I just need a light
If I call you on the phone
Need you on the other side”
From playgrounds, coffee dates, movie shows, music concerts to midnight talks, a friend has stood by us all along. We’ve shared our most embarrassing moments to all the inside jokes, only with friends. Through thick and thin, they’ve perpetually been rock-solid support.
Like it’s rightly said, God couldn’t be everywhere so he blessed us with a mother, similarly so, He couldn’t protect us from all the mishaps, so He gave us saviours in the form of our best friends.
Funny, isn’t it, how our date on Valentines changes from one year to another, but our friends have remained the same! After a deadly exam or a miserable heartbreak, we’ve all ran back to our friends.
“I got you, I promise
Let me be honest
Love is a road that goes both ways
When your tears roll down your pillow like a river
I’ll be there for you”
And somehow, they know us inside out. They have our likes and dislikes, written at the back of their hand. They have tolerated our most annoying habits and gave us necessary criticism when needed. They’ve overlooked all our flaws, and spend time with us without any judgement.
In a society, where it is said that everyone leaves, one way or another, one day or the other, I know, my best friend will stay with me till the end.
“So when your tears roll down your pillow like a river
I’ll be there for you
I’ll be there for you
When you’re screaming, but they only hear you whisper
I’ll be loud for you
But you gotta be there for me too”
We haven’t been expressive and vocal about it, but we know that life is quite hollow without our friends. So, this Valentine’s day, let us show some love to our friends, reconnect with the ones we’ve lost touch with, and let our actions tell them how valuable they are.
