Losing the Limelight : Lal Bahadur Shastri

2nd October is the birthday of two prominent leaders of our country. One guy shook the whole British Empire with a single stick and the other one was known for his simplicity and modesty. Yes I am talking about Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. But what I’ll be talking today is about the lost of limelight because of sharing the same birthday. Everywhere people keep focusing on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday but Mr. Shastri is always either ignored or given a little attention. He was the 2nd PM of Nation and he gave his life for nation while being in the Tashkent Agreement. It is still a mystry whether he got heart attack or he was murdered. Today is his 113th birthday and Gandhi Ji’s 128th birthday.Happy Birthday to Both People. Maybe due to Gandhi’s seniority, he is given so much preference everywhere. But as one of my friend says, Jis cheez ka content available hai log uspe kyon likhenge, kuch unique cheezon pe likhenge na”(“Why would people write on any topic which has vast content available on the internet, people will write on unique things !”). But as I can see, most of them have focused on Mr. Gandhi, so I must focus on Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri and I will tell you some very rare facts about him. So, shall we begin ?

1. Scholar from Kashi Vidyapith

Mr. Shastri was an opposer of caste system and that was the reason why he didn’t add his surname to his name. Shastri Got his degree from Kashi Vidyapith and got his surname as Shastri.

2. Hard Worker

Lal Bahadur Shastri ,as a child, used to swim across the river Ganges with his books on his head to reach school because he could not afford to pay for the ferry boat.

3. Stop Lathi Charge

Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri was the guy who suggested and practiced the use of Jet of Water instead of Lathi Charge on the mob.

4. Man of Guts

Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri was the guy who had the guts to oppose his wife and that too for doing something in his favour itself. When he was in jail, his wife brought him mangoes out of love. But he opposed her and told her that no prisoner is allowed to eat things brought from outside the jail.

5. Man of Patience

Owing to Mr. Shastri’s behaviour he was provided a payroll when his daughter was ill. But he returned before completing the payroll tenure when his daughter expired.

6. One who valued women

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the man who first introduced and applied the idea of getting woman conductors in transports. He did it while he was the Transport Minister.

7. Jai Jawan Jai Kishan (This is not a lesser known fact though)

When there was scarcity of food in 1965, Lal Bahadur Shastri gave the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan to enthuse the soldiers to defend India and simultaneously cheering farmers to do their best to increase the production of food grains to reduce dependence on import. He asked his family to leave one meal of the day and after he was satisfied that people could survive by sacrificing one meal, he requested people to sacrifice at least one meal a week.

That’s all of the fact for Lal Bahadur Shastri and I guess I have given much attention but still, if I have left out some fact then please do inform me. Oh ! In the rush of giving attention to these two people, I completely forgot one of the most important fact about 2nd October. Maybe you people also forgot this that’s why I am again telling this most important fact of 2nd October. “2 October ko VIjay Salgaonkar puri family ke saath Panjim gya tha, wahan shaam 5 bje Baba ke satsang me shaamil hua tha aur agle din Movie dekh ke, vada paav kha ke waapis ghar aaya tha”(This fact is exclusive only for those people who have watched Drishyam movie). If you haven’t watched it yet, do watch it.
