Happy Maha Navmi
Today(29th September,2017) is Maha Navmi,so officially it is an end to the 9 days of prayers going all over the nation. It is believed that it was the last day before Maa Durga killed Mahisasur on Dashmi or Dussehra. Durga Pooja or better called as Durgo Pujo by Bengalis is celebrated with very high enthusiasm in West Bengal and especially in Kolkata. This year, Navratri started on the 21st September 2017(Pratipada) and we wrote this special article on that day which you can read by clicking here.
Navami is believed to be the last day of Goddess Durga’s fight with the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The battle that continued for days, ended on the tenth day, which we celebrate as Vijay Dashmi, on which Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura.
Special Rituals followed during Navratri :
1. In Bengal, The rituals for Navami start with a holy bath followed with a special Shodhasopachar of the deity.
2. In Karnataka, there is also a ritual of performing Ayudha Puja.On this occasion, weapons of the Goddess are worshiped. It is also a significant occasion for soldiers and artisans for whom it is an occasion to revere their weapons and tools.
3. In Mysore, the Royal sword is also worshipped and is taken around the city in a procession on lavishly decorated elephants.
4.Another common ritual followed across the country is that of Kanya puja or Kanjak. Nine little girls that represent the nine forms of Goddess Durga are welcomed into the house by first washing their feet and then tying moli (red thread) around their wrists. These young girls that haven’t yet hit puberty are seen as the embodiment of goddess Durga.
5. Telangana also celebrates the Bathukamma Panduga or the Bathukamma festival on Navami. This is a flower festival where the women of the house create beautiful flower arrangements and decorations in seven concentric layers in the shape of the Temple of Gopuram.
These were the special rituals performed all over our country during Navratri. Tomorrow it is Dussehra so I guess all of you are going to celebrate and enjoy it.
