Forgotten Beauty of India – Part Five

This article was supposed to be the sixth part in the series Forgotten Beauty of India but due to some unforeseen circumstances I was unable to post the article last week and that’s why this is the fifth part of the series. So in this fifth part of Forgotten Beauty of India I’ll be taking you to a tour of Leh Palace. Leh Palace is an abandoned palace, belonging to mid 17th century. It was the seat of Ladakh’s capital,Leh until the state was overtaken by the Dogra Dynasty, which had their capital at Stok.

The Leh Palace is also known as ‘Lhachen Palkhar’.

Leh lies at an altitude of 11,562 feet and used to be an important stopover Silk route days. The palace overlooks the city of Leh, like a custodian. Housing nine storeys, at one point in time it was home to the royals who lived in the top two floors, the academia who practiced in the middle floors and stable and livery staff.

It currently has a rich collection of jewellery, ornaments, Thangkas and so in the Palace Museum. One finds in the museum ceremonial dresses, crowns, and centuries-old pieces of jewellery .It is anything but wonder that such a palace thrived in a place which is among the driest places in India.

Let us have a look at some of the pictures of Leh Palace from different views :
